     Singaporean Consultant Speaking Korean

An international management consultancy had received a big contract to help a giant Korean MNC on how to increase their operational efficiency. But during the implementation stage, the Korean staff couldn’t understand English well enough to receive the transfer of management knowhow effectively. The project was stuck!

This consultancy wanted to have a Singaporean consultant who was fluent in the Korean language with interpretation and translation skills. One after another, two search firms for several months couldn’t find one in Singapore. In desperation, the consultancy called up Apex Headhunters. It was an extremely urgent search assignment. They asked if we could do it in three days because the delay in the project was causing them a lot of money!

At about 1 p.m. we agreed on the search fee. I dropped off all other search assignments and personally rolled up my sleeves and went down to work immediately. I knew a few Korean contacts in Singapore. I started making many phone calls. From there I kept tracing and interviewing for the right candidate. One source led to another. There was no stone left unturned. By 8 p.m. the same day I had more or less narrowed down to one particular candidate. But I couldn’t get hold of him – he was out entertaining his clients. I kept calling his home, but no one was in. 9 p.m., … 10 p.m., … 11 p.m., … 12 midnight – still not home! I marathoned through the night. Finally, at 1 a.m. the next morning, he picked up the phone! He was very surprised to have a headhunter calling him at this wee hour! He thought either I was crazy or I was joking with him!

He came to my office the same day at 10 a.m. and I interviewed him for two hours. He was the perfect candidate. He met other job criteria too. He told me that up to that time he was the only Singaporean that had attended a Korean university. I called up my client immediately and arranged for him to go down for interview at 2 p.m. the same day. At about 5 p.m. he called me to inform that he had passed the interview, and that the second interview would be the next day. He passed that interview too and was given the job offer on the spot! He had some days of annual leave left and I helped him to resign properly. By Sunday he was off in a plane to Korea – all done in one week!!

I enjoy fast pace, challenging search assignments. Speed of delivery is very important to my clients. Nothing is more satisfying than to help my clients solved their problems immediately! That's why Apex Headhunters mission statement is: "When our clients succeed, we succeed too!"

Penetrated Thailand at Last!

 

An international PC manufacturer for years has not been able to penetrate the Thailand market. Every manager they posted there has failed. Apex Headhunters was glad to take up the challenge. I searched through many countries and finally found an excellent Thai candidate working outside Thailand. That was only half the battle won. He was working as a vice president of sales for a PC company and he was doing so well and enjoying his expat life there so much that he didn't want to come back to work in his home country! So I called up his parents in Thailand and talked to them about the good job opportunity I have for their son. Which parents don't like their son to live close by especially when there is a good job for their son at home ground? I also found out from conversation with his father that he has a girl friend in Thailand. I called her to convince him to come back. Then I discovered that they were engaged, so I expedited their marriage! To cut the story short, he came back and took up the position. Within six months, this company's PC sales sky rocketed for the first time in Thailand and he needed a sales manager to help him! Since then he has been doing very well. 

 

To be a successful headhunter, I like to think out of the box to assist my clients scout the best candidates. It is not good enough to find good candidates, but I must also be able to market my clients well, and use all peripheral factors under the sun to convince the TOP 1% candidates to come on board. This is how I add values to my clients' businesses.

Late Start but Won the Prize

 

A worldwide MNC that was number 2 in their industry in the world was looking for a country manager in an Asian country. They selected a search firm from that country to do the assignment. But their Regional HQ was in Singapore. Just to try their luck, the Regional HQ thought it no harm to get another search firm from Singapore to see if it could come up with a better candidate. They screened through a few search firms and Apex Headhunters was selected. Despite being given the search assignment late, Apex Headhunters found an excellent candidate in that Asian country faster than the other search firm from that Asian country! Again, speed has won Apex Headhunters the prize. We monitored this candidate periodically as we do with all other candidates we placed. At the end of first year his sales performance was so good that he achieved the second layer of bonus which was very difficult to hit by this MNC's standards.
